My name is Dan Perenick and I am a Sergeant with the Winchester Police Department assigned to our Detective Bureau and work as our School Resource Officer (SRO).  I am also an adult leader from Boy Scout Troop 519 in Woburn, MA, a former Military Police Officer with the Massachusetts Army National Guard, a former Winchester Auxiliary Police Officer and a former Law Enforcement Explorer.

I have been asked by Mr. Ray Theburge who is the director of the Spirit Of Adventure Boy Scout Council Scouting Outdoor Adventure on the River (S.O.A.R. 2016) event to direct safety, security and communications for this wonderful weekend.  In 2012, SOAR was a tremendous success and had 3,500 scouts, leaders, families and the public attend this unforgettable event.  I assisted Pat Golden for the 2012 event along with many of you and now have been asked by Ray and his committee to bring together an outstanding team who can help keep possibly up to 10,000 people safe and secure.  The program areas are for cub scouts, boy scouts, Venturer’s, Explorer’s, leaders, families and the public from Friday October 7-Monday October 10, 2016 (Columbus Day Weekend).

The reason you are receiving this information is because you either assisted/volunteered during S.O.A.R. 2012 or have been identified as a resource for S.O.A.R. 2016.  As of today we have already signed up 3500 scouts and leaders and are looking forward to the next two months of recruitment to make this event one of the largest in the Boston area.

We have secured the Christian Heter Park along the banks of the Charles River and Soldiers Field Road in Boston, MA just behind the Harvard University Football Stadium and across the street from the WBZ Studios. We are working in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Massachusetts State Police, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office, the Boston Police Department and many other agencies and supporters to make this event the safest venue in the state on Columbus Day Weekend.

There will be an organizational briefing at the Winchester Police Department on Tuesday September 13th from 7-8:30pm.  If you are able to attend, please feel free to bring anyone else who may be of assistance with our mission, just rsvp to let me know.

New this year will be an activity area for Law Enforcement and Fire/EMS Exploring programs.  Not only with the post be able to assist with the safety, security and communications of the event, but also have some down time to try out their skills in areas like M/V Stops, M/V crash with injuries, patrol procedures and other areas of interest.

We will begin operations on Friday October 7th at 6pm and close operations on Monday October 10th at 12 noon.  We will be running security and communications for 24 hours a day and know it may be challenging, but we are working with great public safety partners and hope you, your organization/group will join us and be part of one of the best Scouting events ever…

Items needed as soon as possible:
-An e-mail response stating that you have received this communication and that you are committed to the event as a valuable resource

-If you are able to attend the meeting on Tuesday September 13th
-Provide contact information-name, address, cell phone, and work phone along with the best e-mail address you would like to use along with unit name and number

Please feel free to email or call with questions…

Yours in Scouting,

Dan Perenick
